How HEX to RAL matching works
RAL Classic is a European color-matching standard widely used for paint, coatings, plastics, and architectural products. Unlike HEX or RGB, RAL codes refer to physical color cards rather than a single digital colorimetric definition, so most digital tools (including this one) work from the commonly published sRGB approximations of each RAL Classic card.
This tool converts your HEX color and every color in the bundled RAL Classic palette to CIE L*a*b* (a perceptually uniform color space), then measures the Delta-E (CIE76) Euclidean distance between them. The RAL entry with the smallest Delta-E is the closest visual match — a Delta-E under about 2.3 is generally considered imperceptible to the human eye, while values above 10 indicate a clearly different color.

- What is RAL?
- A European colour standard for paint and coatings, defined by physical reference cards rather than by numbers. RAL Classic uses four-digit codes where the first digit is the colour family — 1000s yellow, 3000s red, 5000s blue, 9000s white and black.
- Why can a hex value not map exactly to a RAL code?
- Because RAL has no public colorimetric specification. The standard is the printed card, so every digital tool works from community-verified sRGB approximations. Two tools can therefore give slightly different answers for the same hex and both be defensible.
- How is the nearest colour chosen?
- By distance in colour space against those approximations. That means the match is as good as the approximation table, and a colour sitting between two RAL entries can flip from one to the other on a change of a single channel value.
- Should I specify a job by the converted code?
- Only as a starting point. Order a physical fan deck and check under the lighting the object will live in — RAL colours are specified for a reason, and metamerism means two samples matching under one light can differ visibly under another.
- What is the difference between RAL Classic and RAL Design?
- Classic is the historic set of about 200 colours with four-digit codes. Design is a later, much larger system organised on hue, lightness and chroma with seven-digit codes, intended to be systematic rather than a curated list. They do not map onto each other.
Common errors and gotchas
- Treating the nearest match as identical. The distance figure is the important part of the answer.
- Comparing on screen rather than against a physical swatch, which is the only reliable check.
- Ignoring the finish, since gloss, matt and texture change the perceived colour substantially.
- Assuming RAL Classic covers everything, when Design and Effect ranges hold colours it does not.
- Converting from an uncalibrated screenshot, where the hex is already not the intended colour.
