What this tool is used for

  • Working out the actual return on a trade after fees.
  • Finding the break-even price you need to recover a position.
  • Comparing two exit prices on the same entry.
  • Checking a realised gain against an exchange's own figure.
  • Understanding how much of a gain the fees consumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the profit figure include?
The difference between what you paid and what you received, less the fees you enter. It does not include network gas, spread on a market order, or the funding costs of leverage — all of which are real and none of which appear on a simple buy-and-sell view.
Why do fees matter more than they look?
Because you pay them twice: entering and exiting. Two 0.5% fees on a round trip mean the price must rise about 1% before you break even — and for a strategy that trades often, the fee schedule matters more than the entry price.
How is percentage return calculated?
Profit divided by the total cost, not by the sale price. The distinction is not academic: a position bought for 100 and sold for 150 is a 50% gain on cost and a 33% margin on revenue, and quoting the wrong one flatters the result.
Does a loss cancel out an equal gain?
No, and the asymmetry is brutal in a volatile asset. A 50% fall needs a 100% rise to recover, and an 80% fall needs 400%. That is why maximum drawdown is a more honest headline number than average return.
Is there tax to consider?
Almost certainly, and the rules vary sharply — many jurisdictions treat a crypto-to-crypto swap as a disposal, so a trade that never touched cash still creates a taxable event. This calculates gross profit only, and it is not tax advice.

Common errors and gotchas

  • Omitting fees on both legs, which on small trades can exceed the gain entirely.
  • Ignoring the spread, which is a cost even when the fee is quoted as zero.
  • Forgetting tax, which in most jurisdictions applies to each disposal.
  • Comparing a percentage return without the holding period, which makes two very different results look alike.
  • Treating an unrealised figure as a gain, which it is not until the position closes.
